Things Fall Apart

You are required to individually read the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. This book identifies life before imperialism and the effects of imperialism as it is happening. Please take notes on the text for each chapter. Your focus is on imperialism and how the author conveys the causes/effects on the social, economic and political aspects of Africa. The author's message may be direct or blatent. It may be subtle or indirect. You need to find out how the author feels about the impact of imperialism on this area.

Complete these questions every twenty pages or so:

1. Describe the main characters.
2. Describe their actions, personalities, beliefs, religions and moral systems.
3. Describe the main characters' lifestyle/setting/socioeconomic situation.
4. Do you like this character? Explain your answer in detail.

After each chapter, answer these questions briefly:

1. Has imperialism arrived in this country yet? If so, identify how you know this citing instances (subtle or blatent).
2. If so, has imperialism helped or hindered your main character? Cite!!!
3. If not, do you think imperialism will help or hinder your character? Explain. Cite examples to support your reasons.

Try to think about this from the natives' and from the imperialists' perspectives. Think about White Man's Burden and also the burden on the native people. Look for subtle clues why imperialism will/has helped or will/has hurt the natives.

Blog entries: Blog entries are not required until Jan. 25th. I will post a question a day from Jan. 25th- 29th about the book. YOU MUST RESPOND TO THE DAILY QUESTION.

  1. 1) the main character in this chapter is Okonkwo. He was the son of a man who was in terrible debt to people and died without paying them back what he owed. Okonkwo was the son of Unoka. Okonkwo was a great man who defeated the srongest man in the village. Okonkwo was the most respected in the land even though his father wasnt. Okonkwo had some temper issues. he used physical violence to resolve his problems
    2) according to the book so far, Okonkwo was a person who had great respect from people who knew him. all of this happened because of the victory against the old strongest.
    3) Okonkwo lives in a village type of settings. he is i guess living the good life since he is te most respected. since his father owed a lot of money to alot of people, then im guessing that he lives in the low leveled type.
    4) so far i do like this character because he shows that he is a very good character even though his temper isnt. he is a type of man that shows that he is the type who knows how to look out for himself through his strength and respect.

3)at this point, i think that imperialism will help my character's settings because he may be a strong person, but with my prior knowledge of the british imperialsm, they still get taken over. i think that imperialism will destroy the ways of their culture
